A Little About the Phalaenopsis Orchid

The name "Orchid" comes from Ancient Greece. It means  power, forceful, machismo and manliness. As the years went by, and the Orchid became more popular in Victorian times, the meaning changed to luxury, wealth, love, and beauty, as it is known today.

The Ancient Chinese described the Orchid flower as a symbol for many children. Men presented Orchids to women to catch their hearts.

How to Make Your Own Affordable White Phalaenopsis Orchid Gift Basket

Of the many different Orchid varieties, the Phalaenopsis Orchid (or sometimes known as the Moth Orchid, Cymbidium, and Dendrobium Orchid) is the most popular flower used in Orchid bouquet.

The Phalenopsis Orchid is the traditional wedding Orchid used a lot in wedding floral arrangements.

When made into a Orchid floral basket for the bride and her bridesmaids it can be very beautiful. The Phalenopsis Orchid comes in shades of pink, lavender, mauve, white, pale green and canary yellow and is often used with white Roses and Madagascar Jasmine, or one large Orchid mixed with white Lilies, green Fern or Ivy.

You could give the bride and groom's families a single Orchid for their boutonnieres or corsages.

How to Make a Floral Basket With Delicate Stemmed Flowers

A traditional bridal bouquet or basket is made up of Phalenopsis Orchids and white Roses with Stephanotis, better known as Jasmine. But to make a bouquet or floral gift basket with these flowers would cost a fortune, and we are all watching our pennies.

Making your own floral basket is easy to do. If you are making a basket for a friend's birthday or another special event or even for your own wedding, mix other flowers and foliage with your Orchids. Have one large Orchid mixed in with white Lilies, Gerbera, Fresias or Carnations and green Fern-like leaves or, buy a bunch of pink or cream Roses mixed with two white Orchids. An Orchid bouquet or basket made to look spectacular.

Below are step-by-step instruction for how to make a floral gift basket with delicate stemmed flowers.

Orchid Bouquet: Things You Will Need:

  1. Line the basket.
  2. Floral foam. The one used for wet floral arrangements.
  3. Flowers of your choice.
  4. Foliage. If using any.
  5. Floral Wire.  To secure the floral foam (oasis)
  6. Scissors.

  1. Choose a basket. Don't buy a big basket, the bigger the basket the more flowers you will need. Is the gift basket for a birthday, Mother's Day or a Valentine's basket?  I would go for a round medium size with or without a handle. For a wedding basket for the bride and bridesmaids, go for a small basket with a handle.
  2. Choose the flowers you would like to use.
  3. When you get your flowers and foliage home, cut the ends of the stems at an angle with a sharp pair of scissors and remove most of the leaves from the stem and place into water so they can have a good drink.
  4. Prepare your basket by lining it with thick plastic and floral foam.
  5. Cut the flowers and foliage to your desired length (I would say, about 6 to 7 inches). For a wedding basket cut the stems to about 3 to 4 inches.
  6. You can also cut the individual flowers of an Orchid as long as they have plenty of stem to insert into the floral foam. (you can use them for boutonnieres or corsages)
  7. If the stems are not that strong insert some floral wire up the middle of the stem or wrap it around the stem. This will give extra support when inserting the stem into the floral foam.
  8. Starting at the top of your basket, insert the largest flowers into the floral foam first, then work your way around and down using the smaller flowers, always turning the basket as you go to make sure it looks good from all angles.
  9. If you are left with any gaps between the flowers, fill those with your greenery or Gypsophila.
  10. Decorate the basket with a bow. Pick a color from the flowers and use that color for the ribbon. Make a bow and wrap some floral wire around the middle of your bow and insert it into the foam.

Don't forget your card or gift tag if this is to be a gift for someone.

I'm sure this inspires you to make a beautiful Orchid bouquet or basket with white Orchids, blue Orchids or any other colored Orchids for someone special in your life or for that special occasion.
