Find Out What Your Helpers Can Do for You

Wedding helper. Need help with your wedding plans? Get your wedding helpers to give you a hand. Bridesmaids, flower girls, ushers, best man, etc, what do they do? How can your helper help you? Find out what their duties are.

Not only is your wedding dress and bridal flowers important but so are your wedding attendants. One wedding helper or 10 helpers, they can help you with so much.

There are so many wedding day helpers that it can get very confusing and you might not want them all.

Here are some explanations of what your attendants can do for you when planning your wedding event.

Wedding Helpers:

 1. Bridesmaids

Principal Bridesmaid, also known as the Chief Bridesmaid or Maid of Honor if she is not married, and a close friend or sister of the bride.

If she is married she is called Matron of Honor.

Being the Maid of Honor or Matron of Honor is a great privilege in itself. This means Maid of Honor or Matron of Honor is the number one person next to the Bride.

  •  She helps choose the dress and attends the dress fittings.
  •  Helps with the wedding preparations. (reception, church, etc.)
  •  Attends church rehearsals.
  •  Hosts the Hen Night and the Bridal shower.
  •  Helps the Bride with her veil and flowers.
  •  Maid of Honor sits at the Bride and Groom's table at the reception.
  •  Has the first dance with the Best Man after the Bride and Groom.
  •  Is a witness at the wedding and signs the marriage license.

These are just a few of the main things the Maid of Honor helps with. She is your wedding aide.

 2. The Junior Bridesmaid

A Junior Bridesmaid is between the ages of seven and 14. Too young to be a Principal Bridesmaid and too old to be a Flower Girl. Her duties are:

  • Attend Bridesmaid dress fittings.
  • Attend church rehearsals.
  • Attend the Bridal Shower and help with gifts, food and clean up.
  • Help plan games for the younger guests at the reception.
  • Hand out ceremony programs at the church.
  • Hand out confetti or rice in gift bags.

The duties of all the Bridesmaids is to help the Bride, you, on your wedding day. Assisting you with your wedding dress, managing your veil, and train of your wedding dress and bouquet or basket of flowers and attending to all your needs on the big day.

 3. Flower Girl

The Flower Girl is a little girl between the ages of three and eight.

She walks just in front of the Maid of Honor and the Bride carrying a Flower Girl basket filled with flower petals, or aromatic herbs such as Lavender, Rosemary, Lemon Geranium; this symbolizes fertility. Scattering the petals in the path of you, the Bride, walk down the aisle.

The flower girl also:

  • Looks pretty in her beautiful Bridesmaid's dress.
  • Dances with the Page Boy or Ring Bearer at the reception.
  • Is in all the photos.

The Flower Girl can stand at the church door holding a flower girl basket. A basket of wedding gift bags, these would be filled with confetti, rice or flower petals for the wedding guests to shower you and your husband as you leave the church.

 4. Usher

Ushers are usually relatives or close friends. If the Groomsman is busy with photos or getting the last minute things ready before the church, the Usher can fill in. Their duties are:

  • Directing the guests to restrooms, answer any questions the guests might have, assist them to their seats in the church and at the      reception.
  • Makes sure the wedding car is decorated and ready for when the newlyweds leave.
  • To hand out programs or service sheets to the guests as they arrive at the church and help the guests to their seats.
  • Let's the Organist know the Bride has arrived.
  • If you have more than one Usher, the other Usher(s) can be first to arrive at the reception to make sure everything is in place.
  • Takes charge of the wedding gifts for the Bride and Groom.

5. Groomsman

The Groomsman is the right-hand man to the Groom if you are not having a Best Man, just like the Maid of Honor or Matron of Honor is to the Bride. His duties are the same as the Best Man's. See below.

6. Best Man

The Best Man is something like the Groomsman above, supporting the Groom on the big day. If you don't have a Groomsman at your wedding then the Best Man will do his duties and more. They include:

  • Organizing a Stag Night
  • The Groom's right hand
  • Help the Groom, Ushers and Groomsman choose their tuxedos
  • Attend all wedding rehearsals
  • Stand beside the Groom in the church with the wedding rings
  • Make sure the Ushers and Groomsmen are all looking busy
  • Be a witness at the wedding and sign the marriage license
  • Make a speech and toast to the Bride and Groom at the reception
  • Dance with the Chief Bridesmaid and the Bride
  • Collect all the wedding gifts
  • Decorate the car the newlyweds will drive away in
  • Might have to drive them to a hotel or somewhere else

As you can see, the Best Man has lots to do, he is the number one man to the Groom, your wedding helper.

7. Page Boy or Ring Bearer

A Page Boy or Ring Bearer is a boy no older than seven years old.

His duties are:

  • Attend all the wedding rehearsals
  • Walk down the aisle beside the Flower Girl
  • Look cute as he carries the Bride's train when the Bride walks down the aisle
  • He carries the cushion with the rings
  • Stand at the church door after the ceremony with a basket of gift bags filled with rice, confetti or flower petals, handing them out to guests
  • Be in all the photos

It's perfectly OK for the Page Boy or Ring Bearer to sit with their parents after they have handed the rings over.

8. Coin Bearers

A Coin Bearer is a bit like a Ring Bearer but with coins. It can be a boy or a girl between the ages of three and six years old. They are nephews or young brothers, nieces or sisters of the Bride and Groom; he or she walks down the aisle bearing coins to the Bride and Groom.

The coins are sometimes know as ‘Wedding Arrhae’. The coins consist of 13 gold and 13 silver coins and it to symbolizes Jesus and his apostles.

Now you are a bit clearer as to what your wedding helper or helpers should be doing. Bridal Flower Girls, Bridesmaids, Groomsman, Best Man ... they are all your wedding day helpers.
